Developmental Delay Symptoms In Children

Development process time may differ from child to child. Some kids show delay in development and must require early medical check up. Mental and physical delays in most of the children improve gradually without any harm but some kids have significant delays in speaking and learning as well. Awareness about early signs of this problem is very important for parents in order to seek medical treatment.

Developmental Delay Disorder Causes

An exposure to risk factors like genetic and environmental during the prenatal period may cause delays and disabilities in infants. Some of these problems can be prevented by using prenatal health care and adopting healthy prenatal lifestyle. Some children follow and catches up with other children and become normal. Development delays in children may be found in cognitive skills, communication, social skills, emotional skills functioning, behavior and gross motor skills.

Developmental Delay Symptoms

Behavioral

  • The child pays no attention or stay focused on an activity for as long a time as other kids of the same age.
  • Remain focused on unusual objects for long periods of time and enjoy it more than interacting with other objects.
  • Child avoid and some times rarely make contact with other things.
  • Feel unusually nervous in trying to do simple tasks which others of same age easily can do.
  • Show aggressiveness and stubbornness in behaviors.
  • Always stares into space and remain absorbed in talking to self for longer periods of time.
  • Child is reluctant to find love from caregivers or parents.

Gross Motor Symptoms

  • The child may have stiff arms and legs.
  • Body has floppy posture in comparison to other kids of the same age.
  • Often seen using one side of body more than the other.
  • Show very clumsy manner in comparison to other at the same stage.

Vision

  • Shows problems in following objects or people with eyes.
  • Rubbing eyes usually.
  • Move head in unusual position while looking at the objects.
  • Find difficulty in picking up small things dropped on the floor or bed.
  • Close one eye while looking at some distant objects.
  • Appearance of eyes remain crossed or turned.
  • Takes things too close to eyes to see.
  • Abnormality in size or color of eyes

Hearing

  • Often talking in loud or very soft voice.
  • Find difficulty in responding to the call from across the room even to some interesting things.
  • Difficulty in understanding of what is said or to follow directions even after reaching three years of age.
  • Shows no startling to loud noises.
  • Deformed or small ears may be seen.
  • Unable to develop sounds or words at an appropriate age.

If any or some of above mentioned symptoms are seen in any children, the parents should consult the specialist as earliest possible to find and correct the problem. The pediatrician or specialist will study the causes, symptoms and follow proper diagnosis to check and control, if there are any developmental delay signs.
